Toolbox 4

For Toolbox 4 we had to make a collages with the pictures we took out from the museum.

Sitting down in class for this assignment I was nervous as it was outside my comfort zone. I had not exeprimented much with collages other than the one we did in our first few classes.

The first collage I did was with the help of a magazine cut out and several artefacts from the South- East Asian room of the magazine. I however was not to fond of my first collage, which did take up a lot of my time. This did not help with my uncertainty of working with collages. I then started working with something I enjoyed seeing in the museum, although it was just for a brief period.

At the museum I went to the Alice in Wonderland gift shop, where they have various 3D artworks and other pictures. This really caught my eye and I decided to make a trench skirt using these pictures. I cut them up in small patches to make them look like ruffles. The end product was such that it could be shaped In the form of a Tote bag, bag with a key chain, a skirt, a hat which I would like to call the “mad hatter”. This was a largely floral aesthetic as they were pictures from the garden and a whole different range of ideas could blossom with the floral theme in mind. Thus, when I actually got down to work, after wriggling all my nerves away my work came together. I finished around 3 collages at school and had to rest at home.

I did struggle with the last few collages as my pictures were also getting over and I was running out of ideas. I was also scared to illustrate the collages in the right way initially, however after having had done them I felt more confident about how i should portray my drawings.

It was a totally new concept, something that I had not tried before and it pushed me to think more outside the box than I normally would have.
