In session 3 we had to do a styling project, we were asked to dress up and come and work with the outfits we were wearing or with the clothes that were provided to us.
Coming into class I was a little frazzled as my train was delayed and I entered late and missed the first few slides of the presentation. I will definitely keep in mind to either reach early or on time as I couldn’t think straight.
I was in a group of three and we all worked together to style and photograph our friend. Once we were asked to start styling I enjoyed the photography part of the class way more than the actual styling and putting the outfit together. It was fun to come up with different concepts and explore the campus for a unique photoshoot. My initial idea was to photograph my peer laying down on the top of a table, taking inspiration from CleoPatra as we dressed her up in an fancy black cocktail dress, however this wasn’t possible.
We ended up taking pictures on top of the tables next to the windows to give it a grand feel, with long windows and walls. After taking a few pictures like this, we brought a mannequin in where we took a short video of her kicking it. This was to show a rebellious side to girls who are always supposed to be ‘prim and proper’. I felt as if there were endless opportunities to turn up with good pictures once we put our mind to it, but each tells a different story.
If we had more time and better tools I would probably helped style friend with different cloth and give it more of a textile look or experiment with spray paint and maybe even create some props for it.
My takeaways from this class was definitely to be prepared prior to class, mentally and even physically to work fast. I enjoyed the photography concept and would love to push my self in different directions so I could come up with pictures that I would probably not have a prior vision of in my head.
